About This Item

New York & London: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1913. This dystopian novel was first published in 1899. Here is a Very Good copy of a Later Printing. Wells, who professed disatisfaction with the novel, made several changes in the 1910. Among them, he changed the title to "Awakes" rather than "Wakes." This book retains the earlier title but with the Harper code "I-N" indicating printing in September of 1913. A bit of a mystery, and Quercus invites any clarification offered. Certainly an uncommon edition. Green cloth binding, decoratively stamped, with titling on the spine and front cover in gilt. Clean text; 329 pages; frontis illustration and 14 others within. Spine has darkened and the gilt is dulled, though perfectly readable; cover remains bright. Top edge a bit dusty. There is a contemporary previous-owner signature on the front paste-down. There is cracking at the Title Page and the joint is tender; otherwise this book would be graded as Near Fine. In an archival plastic protector.. Later Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Synopsis

The Sleeper Awakes (1910) is a dystopian novel by H. G. Wells about a man who sleeps for two hundred and three years, waking up in a completely transformed London, where, because of compound interest on his bank accounts, he has become the richest man in the world. A fanatical socialist and author of prophetic writings, the main character awakes to see his dreams realized, and the future revealed to him in all its horrors and malformities.
