About This Item

London: James Hogg & Son, [1869]. xi,(2),14-284,4 pp. 16 mo. Original green patterned cloth. Gilt title and decoration on the spine and front board. Blind decoration on the rear board. Beveled edges. Original coated yellow endpapers. 4 full page woodcut portraits. 14 small and full page vignettes in text. A slight amount of bumping and rubbing but overall a very nice attractive copy. Text very clean. Not in the Arctic Bibliography. Tillotson has written a brief general history of arctic exploration from the 17th century to the Search for Franklin Period ending with Rae and M'Clintock. He seems to have focused at the end on Kane, Hayes, and William Penny as he includes full page portraits of each. He provides an appendix on Eenoolooapik who was brought to Scotland by Penny and details his return to the Northern Regions. There are a number of later editions but this first edition is far less common and more attractive. The book seems to have been printed in several variant colours. 1869
