Edges slightly rubbed and foxed; fold-out regions also foxed (see photos); else tight and clean within. Very good(+) thus.. Octavo in polished darl blue cloth; xxvii, 197 pages, [1] folded leaf of plates: illustrations ; 20 cm; List of Böhm's compositions: pages 181-188; bibliographical references (page 189) and index. In English. "Originally published in German in 1871." Author Theobald Boehm (1794-1881), often spelled "Böhm" in German, was a German musician and inventor best known for developing the modern Western concert flute and its fingering system, known as the Boehm system. Boehm was not only an inventor but also a skilled flautist. His experiences as a performer led him to make significant improvements to the design of the flute. In 1847, he introduced a new model with larger, centrally placed tone holes and a system of key mechanisms and axles, which allowed for a more even tone and greater control over the instrument. Boehm's innovations revolutionized flute design and his system, with some modifications, is still the basis for the design of the modern Western concert flute." ... Co-Author Dayton Clarence Miller (1866-1941) was an American physicist, astronomer, acoustician, and accomplished amateur flutist. Born in Ohio, Miller spent most of his career at Case School of Applied Science (now Case Western Reserve University) where he served as Chair of the Physics Department for many years. Miller conducted extensive research in various fields. He is perhaps best known for his work on the ether drift experiment, where he claimed to detect the absolute motion of the Earth through the ether, a hypothetical medium for transmitting light waves. However, his results, which contradicted the theory of relativity, were controversial and are generally considered to have been due to experimental errors. As a flutist, Miller had a keen interest in the acoustics of musical instruments. He amassed a large collection of flutes and other wind instruments, which is now housed in the Library of Congress. He also conducted acoustical studies of concert halls and made significant contributions to the design of the organ at Severance Hall in Cleveland. Despite the controversy surrounding his ether drift experiments, Miller's contributions to acoustics and his dedication to teaching have left a lasting legacy in the field of physics.-Bing. / Flute -- Instruction and study.
