About This Item

Jersey, Channel Islands: A. Frank, 1979. First Edition. Wraps. Near Fine. First Edition. 64 pp., 11-3/4 by 8 1/4 inches. Tan printed cover. Wraps. An illustrated catalogue with chapter on the instrument trade and the history of the microscope. 59 individual instrument listings, profusely illustrated, good bibliography in rear.

"January 1980 will be the 150th anniversary of an historic paper which was present by Joseph Jackson Lister to the Royal Society of London. The paper, 'On Some Properties in Achromatic Object Glasses Applicable to the Improvement of the Microscope" proved to be a milestone of far reaching importance in the history of the microscope. It is to the credit of men like Lister, working in Britain and elsewhere, that the tremendous difficulties surrounding the production of achromatic objectives were finally overcome. A turning point had arrived and the mocroscope took on a new role as an indispensable tool in science and medicine. In the field of medicine along, it played its part to an incalculable extent in man's fight against disease.

It is to be hoped that this catalogue,, which from the outset was the brainchild of Dr. Nuttall, will lead to an increased recognition of the instruments of the early achromatic period. It is wihtout a doubt a most important period in the history of the microscope...." (Arthur Frank from the Preface).
