London: Tinsley Brothers, 1872. 1st ed. Hardcover. Very Good. 2 vols. folding map, 4 plans, 11 plates, xii, 503, vi, 519p. Hardcover in original chocolate brown cloth with gilt stamped design of an Indian on front covers. 23cm. Corners frayed. Recased with new inner hinges. Original endpapers preserved. Other restoration includes releasing the free front endpapers from the pastedowns along the gutter areas. Minor chipping and tears at ends of backstrip have been repaired. Binder's conservation report laid in. INSCRIBED in Lady Burton's hand ("To Dear Uncle Robert with the best love of Richard and Puss Burton, January 22, 1872. Garswood") on the free front endpaper in Volume I. From the John Ralph Willis Collection of Africana with his bookplate on the front pastedowns. Richard and Isabel Burton were married at Garwood, her Uncle Robert's home, in 1861. They stayed with or relied upon financial help from Isabel's Uncle Robert from time to time over the years.
