Enormously wealthy as a result of an inheritance, Bubb was patron to Frederick, Prince of Wales, and to poets and writers such as Henry Fielding. He was the center of espionage gathered against the Jacobites. This diary, remarkably frank in showing the seeking of government positions, was first published in 1784. This edition includes new material that was subsequently suppressed. Hard Cover. Octavo; xv, [1], 504 pages; 22 cm. VG; bound in a beautiful three-quarter leather binding by Hope Bindery. This diary is one of the best sources on British politics in the eighteenth century, containing gossip of the government and significant figures within society at that time. George Dodington was a political and nobleman. He was close friends with Frederick the Prince of Wales, the father of George III. Dodington was a collector, with his house in Hammersmith being the popular salon of political and cultural discussions. He was said to be part of a spy ring, collecting information about Jacobite activities, and has been described as an indefatigable schemer. Spine with contrasting lettering piece. Internally clean and tight. Dodington is remembered for his association with Sir Francis Dashwood and with the Prince of Wales.
