First edition. 8vo, iv, 412 pp., errata slip, hand-coloured lithographed frontispiece, 25 lithographed plates (1 hand-coloured), 2 folding maps, original cloth gilt, small chip to head of spine, light wear, a very good copy. Gardiner went amongst the Zulu to preach the benefits of Christianity and civilisation; he was not very successful at this but made a good impression upon the King and his counsellors. London: William Crofts, 1836. First edition. Hardcover. Modern ruby cloth, black leather spine label printed in gilt. Very good. 412 pages. 23 x 15 cm. Two folding maps with outline coloring, 26 plates, two in color. Gardiner attended the Royal Naval College at Portsmouth, serving at sea from 1810-1826, rising to rank of Commander. He then devoted the remainder of his life to missionary work, founding the first missionary station at Port Natal. From 1834 to 1838 he attempted to establish Christian churches in Zululand without success. Color plates clean, a few black and white engravings toned at margins, some text toning, last thirty leaves one half centimeter stain at lower fore-edge.

Original cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine, very good with a little general wear and rubbing, a little marked to the base of the spine (see images). Contents clean and tight, small partially rubbed out name to the very top of the front free endpaper, paste down a little marked, some staining to pages and plates, light toning to some pages, no annotation. A very good first edition copy with all plates present..
