Sttasbourg & Paris: Paris : F.G. Levrault, 1816-1829.. 29 x 20 cm. Handcolored stipple engravings printed in colors. Printed on rag wove paper. OCLC Number:348868. Fine condition. Professeur au Jardin du roi, puis directeur du Muséum, Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu (1748-1836) est issu d’une lignée de cinq naturalistes lyonnais et parisiens. Célèbre pour son approche systématique, il publie un ouvrage majeur en 1789 : Genera plantarum. Jussieu propose au monde savant une classification botanique, fruit de dix-sept années de recherches familiales. Dans ce recueil, il distribue les quelque 20 000 plantes alors connues en 1 754 genres, selon le principe d’une hiérarchie de caractères qui organise le système des végétaux. Sa méthode dite « naturelle » s’oppose au système de Linné, appuyé sur la description visible. C’est un ordre nouveau, qui inspire Cuvier et Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire pour le règne animal. Complete with all 82 hand-coloured stipple engraved plates of monocotyledon plants
Includes palm tree, date, banana, tulip, iris, amaryllis, daffodil, agave, fritillary, maize, ginger, strelitzia, vanilla, cypripedium and epidendrium orchids, etc.
With the heartbreaking caption to the amaryllis plate: Turpin fils pinxt. Mort le 21 Aout 1821, age de 18 ans et 6 jours. "Drawn by Turpin Junior. Died 21 August 1821, aged 18 years and 6 days."
