Lithographic plates include: whale hunting, Fiji, Antarctica, New Zealand, Singapore, Van Diemen's Land, and convict punishment in Hobart ("Punition des Matelots a Hobart Town", showing a prisoner in a metal mouse tumbler. Plate no. 26). The account of the second Dumont d'Urville expedition to Australia and New Zealand. This was the expedition which marked France's entry into the international competition of polar exploration, along with the Americans and British. The French king, Louis-Philippe ordered that Dumont D'Urville attempt to reach the south magnetic pole in order to claim it for France; or, at the very least, to venture as far as the southerly latitude reached by James Weddell in 1823. In this curious little volume, Arago's account of the Freycinet expedition is rendered without employing the letter 'A' once, except, notably, on the title page and some notes for clarity at the end. An example of French witticism applied to narrating the grands voyages.

The popular account of Louis de Freycinet's circumnavigation in the Uranie from the pen of the official artist on the voyage. The voyage touched on the Canary Islands, Rio de Janeiro, Ile de France & Bourbon, Timor, Indonesia, the Marianas & Caroline Islands, Hawaii (13 chapters), Australia (8 chapters), and the Malouines. The plates, taken from drawings by Arago on the voyage, are largely portraits of aborigines encountered around the world, and there is extensive reference to the comparative customs of the peoples. Despite the fact that six editions are recorded in Ferguson, this one is not. Large octavo, with a portrait frontispiece & 60 lithographic illustrations, all edges marbled. A slt. smattering of foxing and a very faint water line on the last 150pp o/w a very clean copy bound in orig. half gilt calf & hardboards, handsome gilt decorated spine. Slt. rubbed at extremes o/w a very bright, tight copy.

Large octavo, with a portrait frontispiece, lithographs and in-text illustrations; original gilt decorated full calf. One of the reduced single-volume editions of Arago's classic account. There were numerous editions of his narrative: this particular one is not recorded by Ferguson (although a four-volume version of the same year is Ferguson 2906). .

The voyage was organized by the French government, under the restored Royalty, to show the flag around the world and to make scientific observations on geography, magnetism and meteorology. Arago was attached to the expedition as official artist, and first published a narrative of the voyage as Promenade autour du monde. The Souvenirs is a more elaborate work, augmented with many new illustrations. The present "richly illustrated edition of the Souvenirs is much prized" (Hill), and the third volume is almost entirely devoted to Hawaii.Occasionally slightly foxed, large stain on last leaves of the second volume, otherwise in very good condition.l Forbes 1134; Hill 30; cf. Borba de Moraes, p. 45 (other edition); Sabin 1866 (other editions).

Paris: Hortet et Ozanne, 1839. A fine set.. Four volumes, octavo, with 60 lithograph plates (six folding); later binding of quarter dark green morocco. A fine set of the substantially changed version of Arago's classic account of the French circumnavigation in the Uranie under the command of Louis de Freycinet, 'often incorrectly described as a later edition of Arago's Promenade... it is actually a different, more elaborate work...' (Hill). Arago was the official artist on the expedition, which spent considerable time in Hawaii as well as New South Wales and Western Australia; the plates here, all after Arago's own drawings made during the voyage, are especially interesting for western Australia, New South Wales, Hawaii and the islands of Micronesia. The eccentricity of both illustrations and narrative in Arago's account made it very popular, and it was of course within the budget of the normal reader (whereas the official narrative in its long series of volumes cost about a hundred times more).… Read More
