Half blue calf over marbled boards, red leather spine label in gilt, gilt stamped designs to compartments, blind stamped rolls, and gilt straight and dotted lines to raised bands, corners of boards rubbed and a few scuffs to the leather. Marbled endpapers and edges, light foxing to the prelims. Half-title present but lacking the frontis portrait. A good, clean copy.

Blindstamped Cloth. 1st American Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 188 pages including notes, 16 pages of advertising for books published by Carey, Lea & Blanchard including Shelley's Frankenstein, Cooper's The Headsman, and Thomas Moore's The History of Ireland among other prominent writers. Page one has a decipherable note about the book covering the page, and page 31 has a paragraph marked upon in such a way as still to be readable a short paragraph Pages 180-188 have become quite brown, but on a good note; the pinkish floral blindstamped binding is very clean, the paper label on the backstrip quite legible, the binding solid. Top and bottom of backstrip have minor wear. Faint stamp of previous owner on front end page. Possibly missing frontispiece. Seemingly a scarce edition of this book..

Ex libris Sam Crimpton, a Hook or Hooke family, and William Wilson of Bardstown, JY, with his rubber stamp on the title-page. head of spine repaired.. A travel memoir by Beckford, author of VATHEK, and one of the wealthiest Englishmen of his era. He built Fonthill Abbey, arguably the most sensational of the English Gothic Revival buildings. It has been said that his visit to Batalha in 1794 influenced his ideas about Fonthill Abbey, which was begun in 1796. The Prince Regent of Portugal insisted that Beckford should visit these abbeys. This copy is extra-illustrated with an engraved portrait of young Beckford, and with multiple photogravure prints of views of these two places.

Ownership signature of Sir Alexander Johnston to half title. Boards typically worn and frayed at corners, light foxing throughout else well preserved and complete. Interesting copy of this work by the author of the classic Gothic novel, Vathek, William Beckford (1760-1844).  The book tells of Beckford's travels and explorations, mainly in Portugal in 1794.  This copy bearing the ownership signature of British colonial official, Sir Alexander Johnston (1775-1849), who served as the third Chief Justice of Sri Lanka.
