A beautiful, huge Holy Bible published in London in the 19th-century. Ornate family Bibles were quite popular in the second half of the 1800s, and this tome is a fine example of enormous, folio family Bibles. This particular Bible contains commentaries from John Stoughton.

This edition is beautifully illustrated with engraved plates of Bible scenes and notes and explanations, as well as a decorative spine and cover!

Meant to be lifetime book, the center of the personal, spiritual and family life. 12 1/4 in. x 10 1/4 in.Brown full calf, modeled and beveled, divided into seven elaborate, floriated segments, tooled in blind, surrounding a large (6 1/2 in. x 3 1/2 in.) segment, bearing the title (Holy Bible) in a Blackletter-style font. Atop is a reclining angel holding a sheaf of wheat, head haloed by golden rays. Five raised bands to spine, with elaborate gilded vignettes to compartments one, three, four and six, book title in compartment two, and "Bible Dictionary and Cities of the Bible" in compartment five. Past conservation evident, most likely rebacking. Rear board repeats the front, though here completely in blind. All edges marbled. Liverpool: Caxton Press, printed by Nuttall, Fisher, and Dixon, no date [circa 1840]. [Bible] FINELY BOUND AND ILLUSTRATED. Folio (41 x 26cm), pp.[2] 960 [2]. With 45 engraved plates by various artists, including an engraved frontispiece and a decorated title page. Plates dated variously between 1815 and 1839. Contemporary tan full panelled calf, with gilt titles to burgundy label on spine, and further gilt decoration. All edges marbled, and brown endpapers. A black ink ownership to the front pastedown, dated 1842. Heavy toning to leaves up to about p.120; quite crisp and clean thereafter. A 3cm tear to the margin of the plate facing p.124, with moderate spotting and a few small nicks and marks to numerous other plates. Upper joint starting, with moderate general wear and bumping to binding. Very good. This edition seems to have first appeared around 1815, with commentary by the Wesleyan Preacher James Wood (1751-1840), but this copy has plates dated as late as 1839 inserted into it. Before the plates an engraved titlepage with the text: "Biblia Sacra Veteris et Novi Testamenti representata Centum Imaginibus Aeri incisis in Forma dimidii Plagulae transverssae, una cum Expositione dilucidativa. Augustae Vindelicorum. Prostat apud Antonium Klauber. MDCCCXXXV". With 100 large engraved plates. (Plates sign. C.P.S.C.M. - Klauber Cath. Sc. et exc. A.V.). A bit of browning to edges of text and plates. Otherwise internally fine.

The 'Kennicott Bible' has long been known as one of the most lavishly illustrated Bibles of the 18th-century. Benjamin Kennicott was a well-known English Hebraist who studied the Hebrew Bible and made his life's work studying and comparing variants of Hebrew manuscripts. And while mass-produced editions of Kennicott's Bible were not produced with the same vibrancy and page-to-page illustrations as the original, Family Bibles with Kennicott's translations are still popular and widely read.

This 1795 Dublin printing was published by Zachariah Jackson who included 50 impressive, full-page engravings in this 'authorized' edition.

Full red embossed calf, gilt topboard illustration (Sermon on the mount) rear illustration (Rebecca at the well), gilt print and decorated spine with 5 raised bands, gilt edge dentelles, a.e.g. Demy 4to. pp. [8], vi, 3-1124, [11], map, 348, [2] list of NT illustration, [2] blank. Very Good. Top board has a dark stain and is 2/3 attached; some cap chipping and slightly darkened spine with some stains; light corner dampstain to last pages of New Testament. The Cole title is bound before the general title to the Bible and 204 plates on 51 leaves are inserted in the appropriate places through the biblical text. Later black calf binding, the boards panelled with gilt rolls and corner tools. The spine with raised bands and gilt pallets. Rubbed on the edges and corners and an old damp mark at the top of the rear board, not visible on the text leaves. Marbled endpapers. Occasional headlines or catchwords trimmed by the binder. The paper shows spotting or toning as the sheets vary through the volume. There is a specially printed presentation leaf bound before the Common Prayer 'The GIFT of Mr. James Hudson,to His Godson JAMES CRISP.April 16.
