The overt of her poetry is a precise photo realistic account of the physical, but a closer analytic examination exposes the reader to humanistic themes of longing, depression and alienation. Since her death in near obscurity, Bishop has been noted among the great American poets of the 20th century.

Bishop's "Poem" was first published in the New Yorker in 1972 and later appeared in her acclaimed poetry collection, Geography III (1976). In the semi-autobiographical poem, the narrator finds an old painting of a Nova Scotian town that had "spent 70 years as a minor family relic handed along collaterally to owners who looked at it sometimes, or didn't bother to." The narrator recognizes the town from her youth and reflects on her connection with the painter. This copy, one of an over run of 24 copies, is numbered "Publisher's proof #4", it's signed by Bishop and inscribed on the colophon by the publisher Robert Wilson to a close friend. The only book of Bishop's issued in a signed, limited edition, the poem which begins "About the size of an old-style dollar bill," is now her most reprinted poem. MacMahon A11.
