Hardbound, light blue cloth with dark blue lettering and red bordering on spine and front board, in good+ condition with a bit of sun-fading on the spine, previous owner name on front pastedown, one page corner creased, interior otherwise clean and unmarked, binding and hinges firm. Dj in good only condition with edgewear, small tears and chips, price ($2.50) present on front flap but crossed through with pencil

Clean. 206 pp. By the author of Tobacco Road and God's Little Acre. Caldwell writes about poverty, racism and social problems in the South.

This is the softcover stated Signet First Edition from July 1952. Other than a back cover corner crease, both the cover and the book are in excellent condition. Viking, 1938. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Signed first edition, autographed by author on halftitle - reading 'by Erskine Caldwell'. A near fine copy in near fine jacket complete with $2.50 price (jacket has very faint flaws to edges; cloth has some minor discoloration). This title is uncommon signed. Bookplate of noted collector Henry Tatnall Brown, Jr., Dean of Haverford College, and co-author of 'A Bibliography of Christopher Morley'. Knox College Special Collections has provided information on some details of Brown's bookplate: 'Henry Brown's bookplate may be a miniature autobiography: the three institutional seals at the bottom suggest that he attended the public schools of Philadelphia ('Good instruction is better than riches'), Haverford College, and was a member of the Orpheus Club. The golf clubs and guitar in the drawing of the library probably represent, along with the books, his hobbies.'.

In an especially crisp example of the dustwrapper, unclipped and with just a hint of toning at the spine panel, very Near Fine. Caldwell's fourth collection of stories, continuing his preoccupation with the Southern underclass milieu established in Tobacco Road and God's Little Acre. A lovely copy, uncommon thus.
