Verses of Paul Celan's poem, printed on translucent vellum, alternate with white Fabriano paper on which Kuball has executed sharp cuts, which themselves evoke violence, fragmentation, and, aptly for Celan's titular fugue, death. Some sheets, whether vellum or Fabriano, remain immaculate. Todesfugue is one of the few projects by Kaldewey not printed in Helvetica, but in Gill Sans. Celan lived in France and was influenced by the French surrealists but wrote his poetry in German (he was well versed in at least six languages, and also translated the work of many notable poets).
