Description:
Oswald Train, Philadelphia, 1969 An unusual copy of the first edition: unbound signatures (never bound) wrapped in the dustcover. 7 5/8 x 5 1/4 inches, 216 pp. Very good. "The world of Romney Pringle has long since disappeared. They were the days of few telephones or automobiles, and the electric light was still new. The Wright Brothers, Professor Langley, and others, were still experimenting with their crude flying machines. A cab was a horse-drawn hansom cab, and Romney's favorite mode of transportation was the bicycle. Romney Pringle was a rogue, a man who lived by his wits --- no Robin Hood, certainly! But he was not vicious, and his victims were con-men, thieves, and the like. There is a tongue-in-cheek type of humor in these stories, so lacking in the usual crime story. These are the last six Romney Pringle stories --- there are no more. The Submarine Boat. The Kimberley Fugitive. The Silk Worms of Florence. The box of Specie. The Silver Ingots. The House of Detention. Biographical… Read More

"Richard Austin Freeman (11 April 1862 – 28 September 1943) was a British writer of detective stories, mostly featuring the medico-legal forensic investigator Dr. Thorndyke. He claimed to have invented the inverted detective story (a crime fiction in which the commission of the crime is described at the beginning, usually including the identity of the perpetrator, with the story then describing the detective's attempt to solve the mystery). Freeman used some of his early experiences as a colonial surgeon in his novels. Many of the Dr. Thorndyke stories involve genuine, but often quite… Read More

Description:
London: Ward, Lock and Co, 1902. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 8" by 5". None. The impossibly scarce blue version of the first edition of Richard Austin Freeman's important work of detective fiction 'The Adventures of Romney Pringle'. A vanishingly scarce and important work of detective fiction. Queen originally believed only six copies of this work existed. However, subsequently a very few more copies have been discovered in private collections and institutional collections.Despite there being only a handful of copies, the book was issued in both blue and red cloth.Freeman's bibliographer David Chapman notes that the blue copies were handled by the author and for libraries. This, Chapman suggests, would give the blue cloth priority. So far Chapman has located twenty six copies including this one. The white vignette to the front board is faded slightly. R Austin Freeman was a celebrated author of detective fiction. He invented the inverted detective story, and created one of the first… Read More
