Description:
New York: Liveright, 1976. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Typescript edition. The original 1922 manuscript with the 34 additional poems from *&.* Edited with an afterword by George James Firmage. Introduction by Richard S. Kennedy. Quarto. Light offsetting on front fly from laid in magazine clipping, else near fine in a near fine dust jacket with modest wear at the crown, and slight curling. Author's first book of poetry, preceded by a novel. *Tulips and Chimneys* established Cummings's famously individual voice and tone. However, amid the eccentric punctuation and phraseology was an underlying faith in the individual and derision of the collective and socialized man; Cummings stands as perhaps the best example of a 20th century poet who was able to strike a balance between experimental and significant. *Connolly 100*.

Author's first poetry collection, and second book overall (after The Enormous Room), published before he did away with the capitalization and punctuation in his name. "Cummings expressed ideas through new grammatical usage: he employed verbs as nouns, and other locutions as new linguistic creations (for example, 'wherelings, whenlings / daughters of ifbut offspring of hopefear / sons of unless and children of almost / never shall guess'). He indulged in free play with punctuation and capitalization. Lowercase letters were the rule; capitals were used…
