He was made a member of the firm's board of directors in 1944, a vice president in 1955, and retired in 1965 after thirty-five years with the company. Under his direction Harper published such authors at Teilhard de Chardin, Harry Emerson Fosdick, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Albert Schweitzer, and Paul Tillich. After his retirement Mr. Exman became archivist and historian for Harper. He was the author of "The Brothers Harper: A Unique Publishing Partnership and Its Impact on the Cultural Life of America from 1817 to 1853," published in 1965, and "The House of Harper: 150 Years of Publishing," 1967.… Read More
