Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1883. Account of the ill-fated Jeanette expedition, relying on an incorrect theory, hoping to find passage to the open Arctic Sea. The ship became ice-bound, then crushed; De Long led the crew over ice with three smaller boats toward the Siberian coast, but De Long and all but 13 of the crew of 33 perished. The book, edited by De Long's widow, is based on his notes & journals, and the testimony of the survivors. Two volumes, recently rebound, as pictured. First edition (first printing) with 1883 on title pages & copyright pages. Light wear to books, but volume I has substantial water staining affecting the last 140 pages or so, and the large folding map showing the overall track of the mission is MISSING; a few pages with minor tears or stains; incorrect date on new spine labels. Author was lieutenant-commander U.S.N., and commander of the polar expedition of 1879-1881. Details the ill-fated voyage of the USS Jeannetee, an early expedition up the coast of Alaska and Siberia into the Artic Sea. Ultimately, the ice flows of the Artic Sea caused the ship to sink and the survivors to make their way to Siberia. De Long was killed in in the course of the expedition. Tight wth some light foxing. Marked only on title page and remnants of card holder inside front cover. Overall clean.. Quarter Leather/Boards. Very Good+/No Jacket - Issued. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Ex-Library.
