This very unique book appears to be a proof copy. It is made up of loose sheets. The cover is heavier cardboard. It is almost as new and appears to be a later reprint or facsimile copy since it is in such great shape. It was sealed in plastic. I cannot find any listing of Duell, Sloan and Pearce doing a reprint or facsimile edition only a Harper's edition. Besides having D,S and P on title page someone has written the date 1953 on the title page. On the first blank page there is a 1991 former owner's inscription. Gorey's name does not appear on the cover as other editions do. A fine copy and extremely rare.

The author/illustrator's first book. Paper to boards with some light wear at head and heel of spine, corners, bottom edges of boards rubbed, the slightest fading to top edge near spine of rear board, a nice unsoiled copy. Dust-jacket a little darkened, small points of wear to extemities, particularily head and heel of spine, with some very minor loss of paper at corners, two small triangular chips to front panel top edge (1/2 cm and 1 1/2 cm), very thin light crease to same edge and a small closed tear to top edge of rear panel.
