Hardcover no dust jacket. Green cloth binding with blind stamped boards and gilt lettering in poor condition with splits side of spine leaving front board a little loose but still mostly attached, spine faded with rubbing and bumping to boards and edges. Inside previous owners inscriptions to front paste down and FFE papers, all pages in good clean condition although spine cracked in several places.

Original publisher's blind-stamped navy cloth, lettered in gilt. Lightly rubbed and marked. Armorial bookplate to FEP, frontispiece a trifle creased, else internally clean and crisp. The first edition of a succinct study, intended for a juvenile readership, of the wonders of the world's oceans. The author, zoologist Philip Henry Gosse (1810-1888), was highly influential in popularising natural science and marine biology. He is famed for establishing the first public aquarium (and indeed coining the term), triggering a craze for such exhibits to sweep through Victorian society. . 8vo.
