Black coated end-papers. All edges gilt. 64 pages. Illustrated frontispiece [with tissue guard present], and 41 vignette steel engravings by Mary A. Hallock and Thomas Moran. A later printing, without the date on the title-page, but 1874 on the copyright page. Previous owner's names on second blank leaf. Cloth binding shows rubbing and wear commensurate with age. Paper on inner front hinge cracked, albeit hinge strong. Interior is clean with no foxing or writing [but for names mentioned above]. A sound, tightly bound, acceptable copy of this early printing. Hallock {Foote} and Thomas Moran. Printed on one side of the leaf only. [BAL 12538]. Variant state of binding with title on gilt diamond background. Also, the List of Illustrations is bound in before the frontispiece and title-page. Both Moran and Hallock were Easterners who illustrated the American West. Novelist Hallock's papers inspired the saga Wallace Stegner wrote in the Pulitzer prize-winning novel, ANGLE OF REPOSE.

Exterior shows only minor scuffing along with edge and corner bumps/wear. This book has an attractive exterior which would normally grade as VG+ to near fine but it does have some interior issues. Forest green end pages in front and rear are free of any handwriting or bookplates, no library markings. There is a brief gift inscription on the fourth front end page, and this is the only handwriting found. Pages are toned due to age and light foxing is present throughout. Pages are of heavy bond paper, thick like an index card. The reason for the low condition grade is because the interior binding is brittle and a bit noisy when opened. With a previous owner's written on the first blank page after the front endpaper dated 'Xmas 83.' Includes a carte de visite of a drawing of Longfellow's daughters. The image is slightly aged and there is a little staining of some kind but it is in overall good condition.

Some browning to spine label, some soil to cover, light edgewear; inner pages are faintly browned at edges, but clean. Front endpaper is inscribed "To Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Harrison, From N.B. Ripley, with appreciation of many kindnesses and good behavior, Christmas, 1936." Ripley was a poet from Milford, New York. Black-and-white illustrations throughout. 64 pages; approx. 6"x8"..
