There are also one or more copies in the Hughes papers at Yale. This otherwise unpublished version clearly predates the publication of "Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz" in July, 1961. Comparison of the two versions shows that this version was an undated work in progress. The poetry in the published book has evolved mostly by addition of text although there are also deletions, word changes and occasional splitting or combination of words or lines. The music cues evolve even more, becoming much more detailed and sometimes changing significantly. For, example, in "Shades of Pigmeat," (Mood 3), the instruction in this version at one point calls for "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen" but has changed in the book to "humming "All God's Chillun Got Shoes."
