Description:
Toronto: L.K.Cameron, 1909. First Edition. Jones’s 1906 map of Huronia shows the various Huron settlements in the area of Simcoe County, as they existed in the first half of the sixteenth century before the Huron population was basically annihilated by the Iroquois. It is based on documentary evidence as well as topographical investigation and a careful personal inspection of the principal sites. Part I of the text is concerned with the identification of the various village sites with a section on the derivation of the Huron place-names while Part II is a chronological record of the Huron missions and missionaries’ arrivals and departures year by year from 1616 to 1650. Among the illustrations are a number of reproductions of watercolour sketches made by Father F.Martin who visited the region in 1855. “A definitive study.” (Story p. 372). 8vo. pp. xxxii, 505. numerous maps & illus. (some colour) & 2 large folding maps at end. biblio. index. A very nice copy in original cloth. elala5924
