Political career of Philip, fourth Lord Wharton (1640 to 1691) Philip Wharton was a puritan peer of middling rank with estates in Yorkshire.In 1640 he took a leading part in local resistance to the policies of the Crown. He achieved prominence as a leader of the Parliamentary opposition and throughout the Civil War was a member of the extreme group in the House of Lords. After the Restoration he attempted to further the interests of the nonconformists by courting both Stuart princes and the opposition. Latterly the fell out of favour and spent some time in the Tower and in exile.
