London: Secker & Warburg, 1942. Third Edition. Blue Cloth. Very Good Plus/Good Plus. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 320pp. An early impression - third UK edition, translated from the German. Very scarce with dust wrapper. Light fading to the spine of the book, withb light mottling to the rear board, all hidden under the wrapper. Very clean and tight. Original paper dust wrapper not price clipped. Sunning ot the spine of the wapper with a little loss of up to 1 cm at the head of the spine of the wrapper. A couple of short niks to the wrapper at the tail of the spine. One corner of the front inner flyleaf has been turned, leaving a neat crease. A cople fo light foxspots to the rear of the wrapper. A well preserved very good copy.

Translated by Willa and Edwin Muir. Upper text block edge dyed yellow. Clean pages with noticeable tanning and foxing throughout. Tightly bound with faint thumb-marking throughout. Mild water staining to pastedowns and lower edge of front and rear pages. Small tears and minor loss to a few page edges where uneven rough cut has been badly opened. Boards have light edgewear with corner crushing and notable marking to boards. Notable tanning to spine, which has mild crushing to ends. Notable water stains and mild mottling to boards. Book has forward lean. Boards are notably warped. Pale mark to foot of spine.

Former owner's early ink name on front flyleaf, with a few light pencil scorings in text (easily erasable), spine and extremities are lightly toned, very light wear at the crown, a very good or better copy lacking the dust jacket.

Kafka's first full-length work translated into English First edition, first impression, of Kafka's first major appearance in English, providing the foundation for his great international standing. Perhaps due to the British public's unfamiliarity with the 'kafkaesque', initial sales "were appalling, though the book won recognition of Kafka's genius" (Hodges, p. 101). It is estimated that a mere 500 copies were sold. The Muir translations remain in print today. In his introductory note, Edwin Muir states that "Franz Kafka's name, so far as I can discover, is almost unknown to English readers" (p. v), having previously appeared only in disparate translations of his short stories.
