Only occasional minor foxing, o/w. contents fine. Original green cloth boards, spine professionally relaid, with gilt bird motif on front cover and spine, all in nr. fine condition. A very pleasing copy. Captain Clark Kennedy published this book whilst at Eton. The first bird book to be illustrated using photographs. William Edwin Glegg was a dedicated and well respected ornithologist. He was the author of �A History of the Birds of Essex� (1929), �A History of the Birds of Middlesex� (1935) and a good number of papers for the Essex Naturalist.

Eton; London: Ingaton and Drake; Simpkin, Marshall, and Company, 1868. Hardcover. Very Good. First ornithological book with photographs - 4 handcolored albumen photos. Green cloth boards are lightly soiled. Some wrinkling to the boards, rubbing and scuffing to corners and ends of spine. Interior is unmarked with scattered foxing throughout, except for previous owners' names on half title page. Beautiful color to the photographs. Gilt title on spine and bird illustration on front cover and spine are clear and bright with light rubbing. Binding is tight and square, although the inside hinge is beginning to crack.

First edition of the first ornithological book illustrated with photographs, and published when the author was a mere sixteen years old; small 8vo, pp. xiv, [2], 232; four orig. hand-colored albumen prints of birds (stuffed specimens); orig. green cloth, gilt vignette on upper cover, gilt lettering and vignette on spine; expertly rebacked with old spine imperceptibly laid down; overall appearance is fine and bright. Truthful Lens 96: "It was impossible at this time to photograph live birds due to the absence of the telephoto lens and extremely light-sensitive plates that would permit short exposures. Muybridge [Animal Locomotion, 1887] was the first to photograph birds in flight. The author, perhaps also the photographer, is given the by-line "An Eton Boy"." Gernsheim 436.
