New York: D. Appleton & Co, 1839. Third Edition. Hardcover. Good. Quarto, 176pp., illustrated with 48 plates (included in the pagination). A good copy only in contemporary 3/4 brown calf and brown ribbed cloth. General rubbing to extremities, foxed and dampstained internally, but complete and structurally sound. A worn, but not abused copy of this rare survey of contemporary architecture in the first half of the 19th century. All editions are scarce in commerce, and we find just a few dealer offerings or auction appearances in the last century.

New York: D. Appleton & Co, 1849. A New Edition. Hardbound. Poor, a binding copy that retains its original spine beneath the taped pseudo-spine, but lacks it's original boards (these having been replaced). To rebind this nicely would cost about $250 very readable and usable as-is. Exlibrary copy with stamps on text block edge. The whole contained in a custom clam-shell box. Blue boards with worn leather tips, black tape spine. 80 pp., followed by 48 bw plates, each with preceding text page. Charles Wood described this edition as follows: "Originally published 1835, all editions are rare. It consists of a section entitled "Architectural history" extracted from Elmes's Dictionary, a glossary of names and terms used in architecture from the Encyclopedia Britannica, and a series of exquisitely drawn and engraved designs for doors, windows, and partitions, the orders, etc. Of particular interest is a new Greek order of Lafever's own invention (illus in Hamlin, pl. Rebound in 20th century red cloth, with gilt title on spine. 4to., 526 pp., illustrated with 112 b&w, duo-tone and color plates. All 112 plates called for are here. Top edge gilt. 4 pages (title page, 1 end paper, and 2 Table of Contents pages) have old paper repair tape on the recto side; tape now browned. Light age-toning to the text; no foxing or browning to the text or plates. Very Good with Near Fine plates. Lafever was to earn a great fame in Brooklyn with a series of superb Gothic Revival churches, of which Holy Trinity (1844-7) is the largest and most famous, the Church of the Saviour nearby (1844) the most refined and exquisite.

Quarter modern morocco over contemporary cloth, top edge gilt. First edition, posthumously printed, of this influential manual by an esteemed Greek Revival architect - "the last of the best of the architectural vade mecums." Lafever was an influential Greek Revival architect, writing three books on Greek designs and details. This work, combines a history of architecture with a survey of a wide range of ancient and modern styles, all written in a style suited for Lafever's general readership of 19th-century Americans.
