Description:
Stockholm: C.E. Fritze, 1937. Hardcover. Near fine. This is No. IX of 20 copies printed on Antique Verge chamois paper and signed by Lagerlof, with an engraved portrait of the author signed by artist Axel Fridell. The total edition was 220 numbered copies. The first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, Selma Lagerlof (1858-1940) assured her place in Swedish letters with this 1891 novel, which was inspsired by the legends, superstitions, and fairy tales of her native Varmland region. This novel also served as the basis for the 1924 silent film of the same name that launched Greta Garbo into stardom. Octavo, two volumes. In three-quarter blue morocco over marbled paper bindings by Isbergs (Norrkoping), with five raised bands and decorative gilt stamping. The original wrappers are bound in. The bookplate of noted art collector Dani Liebenfeld appears on each front pastedown. Quite lovely.
