The half-title page has a gift-inscription, and a pleasing wood-cut ex-libris plate (Hilary Snell). One of these previous owners were obviously dismayed at the absence of coloured illustrations and set about rectifying this deficiency. Consequently several of the illustrations were coloured in by various media. Nonetheless, they bring some character to the book. Blind pressed art deco style decoration on the front board. The spine has been repaired. The boards are worn, scuffed, marked all about from handling and ownership. The boards and spine are steady and sure. The end papers are worn about the edges. The contents have evidence of avid use throughout. The pages have marks from handling and use. There are occasional splashes of foxing. Lang defends his practice of intermixing older legends with newer tales in the preface, which responds to criticisms made by the president of the Folklore Society. Henry Justice Ford's (1860-1941) artwork for the series "provided a benchmark in fantasy illustration" (Grolier). Though the Fairy Books are credited to Andrew Lang (1844-1912), he acknowledged in the preface to Lilac (1910) that they "have been almost wholly the work of Mrs [Leonora] Lang, who has translated and adapted them from the French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Catalan, and other languages". The Yellow Fairy Book compiles tales from around the world, including well known stories such as "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "Thumbelina". An extremely prolific artist, Ford (1860–1941) began exhibiting his paintings at the Royal Academy of Art in 1892. It was his work as book illustrator, however, that gained him worldwide fame in the 1880s and 1890s. Ford "concentrated on legends and folklore as subjects to illustrate and mixed carefully observed objects from the real world with fantasy creatures from an imaginary world in a very convincing way.
