New York: Bartram & Lester, 1866. Charles Edwards Lester (1815-1890) was a prolific historian, biographer, and abolitionist. He was a delegate to the Antislavery Conference of 1840, and published this critical work a year later. It was completely revised for this Second Edition (First Thus), which is less common than the original. These are Very Good copies of the First Edition Thus. Green pebbled cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spines; gilt Bartram & Lester logo on the front covers. Two volumes with clean texts; volume I is 304 pages; volume II continues the pagination to 601. Mildly bumped and rubbed; volume I is a bit darker on the spine; some light soiling. Volume I has a penciled signature (contemporary) on the Title Page, Solid, firm condition; no dustjackets, as issued. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Thus. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.

Light oval purple inkstamp on each title page of "The Irish World" (New York newspaper, 1870-78); small inoffensive 19th century ownership name inkstamp no occasional lower page margin; text block lightly age toned, with bits of sporadic foxing. A tight, nice second, revised edition of this 1841 study by this American author and diplomat (1815-90) -- popular and controversial as it harshly critiques England's social and labor inequities. Lester clearly reissued the book after the Civil War in order to add a section criticizing England's attempt to aid the Confederate cause. Not in Allan Nevins' "Civil War Books: A Critical Bibliography," although his 1863 "The Light and Dark of the Rebellion" is. Very uncommon.

Hinges tight and interior clean but for very light sporadic foxing, with only endpapers showing heavy toning. Two page catalog of books at rear of vol. I and 29 page catalog at rear of vol. II, as called for. A very nice set of the authors' extensive travels in England and his often scathing commentary on what he found there in 1840. From the Corn Laws to the Irish question Lester rebukes the supposedly civilized society which had given birth to so much that he obviously admires. Among the individuals whom he praises was a young author who had captured the popular imagination with The Pickwick Papers and Nickolas Nickelby. Introduced to Boz by Thomas Campbell, Lester includes a very detailed and sympathetic chapter of his visit to Dickens at his home.
