In 1853 he resigned his commission as Lieutenant Colonel due to ill health. During the Civil War he returned to military service in the Volunteers as Major General of Pennsylvania Volunteers. Theodore Dwight Woolsey, (1801-1889) was American educator and scholar and president of Yale (1846-71), whose many innovations later became common in institutions of higher learning. "Mrs. G.W.
