This detailed pamphlet is scarce: we have traced only three institutional copies (universities of California, Cambridge, and Ottawa). George Evans Moule (1828-1912) was the first Anglican bishop of mid-China. Beginning his missionary work in 1857, he experienced the Taiping siege of Ningbo first hand. In 1864, he was posted to Hangzhou, becoming the first Western missionary to work outside of a treaty port. Among his many scholarly endeavours, he translated the Book of Common Prayer into classical Chinese. Moule's notes on Hangzhou's history and expatriate community were read at a meeting of the Hangzhou Missionary Association in June 1889 and subsequently printed for private circulation.
