Loddington This so-called volume II, first published in 1727, and distinguishable by the definite article at the beginning of the title, enjoyed a separate publishing existence from Bailey's An Universal Etymological Dictionary. The work contains an abundance of interesting additions (many from correspondents and contributors - a now accepted practice in lexicography), accents (here first introduced in dictionaries), woodcuts in the text, and heraldic, sporting, military and navigational terms, plus a 36-p. section of canting terms and a 22-p. section of proper names, complete with etymologies. Bookplate of James Mead, Curator Emeritus of Marine Mammals at the Smithsonian. Early ownership inscription of Hugo Rankin dated April 23, 1802 and February 17, 1808, This is the last London edition of Bailey. The editions of 1800 and 1802 were printed in Edinburgh and Glasgow respectively. Alston V, 125 (locating 6 copies). ESTC locates 11 copies.

Davidson, J. and J. Rivington, J. Hinton, J. Ward, W. Johnston, and M. Cooper, 1749 (includes one ad at rear). Volume II is the first edition from 1727 (ends at Finis after Zoophytes, possibly an original blank leaf following.) Unformly bound, probably in the 19th century in full brown leather with burgundy leather spine labels, marbled endpapers, edges stained red. Repaired, probably in the 19th or early 20th century with joint repairs. Some wear to leather, but an attractive set. The mismatched dates mean you get one first edition and one with "considerable improvements." One of the most important of English language dictionaries.

Second Edinburgh edition; 8vo, pp. xiv, [910]; lexicon in double column; mild waterstain with some limpness to the paper in the lower fore-margin of the first leaf of the lexicon proper, a few other minor spots and stains, but generally a good, sound copy in contemporary full calf, red morocco label (slightly chipped) on spine. This copy with an unusual bookplate, printed with the owner's name and date (William Pasmore [ornament] 1799.") irregularly cut in an oval shape, and mounted on the front pastedown; bookplate torn but without loss. Also, with a manuscript inscription on the rear pastedown: "Edinburgh June 17th, 1794 Ann Pasmore died March ye 18th and was buried Good Friday the 25th 1796." Early edition of An Universal Etymological English Dictionary by Nathan Bailey rebound in quarter calf with marbled boards. A lovely copy of the most popular dictionary in eighteenth century England, completing thirty editions with its last being in 1802. Bailey's dictionary is known as one of the first English dictionaries to focus on defining words of common usage as well as lesser known, difficult words. Nathan Bailey was the author of several dictionaries including Dictionarium Britannicum. Rebound with no endpapers, blanks, or a half title.  Rebound in quarter calf with marbled boards. Externally, smart. There is some light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, and some bumping to the extremities. The front hinge is strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with the odd spot and light age toning.… Read More

Contemporary panelled calf, the spine ends worn, the boards holding by the cords, ms. inscription by Edward Lea, 1739, Price 6:0 shillings, text clean with last leaf adhering along the inner edge to the rear free end-paper not affecting text, overall a nice, unsophisticated copy. *The Dedication, by Bailey, is in Latin, his lengthy Introduction in English - 'The Faculty of Speech, which makes so considerable a Difference between a Man and a Brute, is of excellent Use, as it renders Mankind conversible one with another.............'. The purchase price of 6 shillings, in 1739, would today be equivalent to : Real price of that commodity is £51.09 - labour value of that commodity is £644.90 - income value of that commodity is £871.80 - economic share of that commodity is £8,058.00.
