Gilt design on front cover; gilt lettering and design on spine--clear. 12 short stories by this former war correspondent/journalist, philanthropist set in the "Black Country" in England's industrial area. Stories are dark, tragic, fitting for Tophet, a location for punishment in the Bible.Very nice and rare colletible.

Some wear to corners and spine extremities else VG. All the village agreed that there was something queer and unholy about Mother Gough. Her cottage with the little workshed at its side was the last along the hill, and the children, on their way to the few starved fields and naked refuse-heaps crossed the black road before they came to it, and hurried past with furtive glances at the grim old figure standing there, half revealed by the orange light of her furnace.

Nevinson, a well known suffragist, was a war correspondent during the First World War, and also a journalist with an interest in exposing slavery.
