The phrase 'Tom and Jerry' and British usage of 'Tom and Jerry shop' originate from Pierce Egan's fictional work set in London. Without the illustrations called for. Pierce Egan was a popular British journalist, sports writer, and cultural commentator of the early nineteenth centuries. His popular book, Life in London depicted two young encountering both high and low life as they progress through London. The play adaptation of this work was the first play to have a continuous run of one hundred performances, but the lack of copyright protection meant that the book was pirated and plagiarised. Boards and spine are straight. Binding is tight. Marbled end sheets and paste downs near pristine. One inch tear in gutter to first white end sheet. Color frontispiece protected by tissue. Pages are lightly toned but clean and near pristine. Complete with color plates. .

London: John Camden Hotten, no-date [circa 1869]. An early edition, not the first, but with the 36 colored plates by Cruikshank. Freshly re-bound in marbled boards with red leather spine ruled in gold; black leather spine label lettered in gold; top edge gilt. "Life in London" was a monthly satiric journal written by Egan and published by Hotten with illustrations by Cruikshank. The first edition of "Life in London or, the Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorn, esq., and his elegant friend, Corinthian Tom, accompanied by Bob Logic, the Oxonian, in their rambles and Sprees through the Metropolis" appeared on 15 July, 1821. British plays based on Egan's characters launched a "Tom & Jerry" craze here and, in name at least, the "Tom & Jerry" cartoon characters. Fine. THIRTY-SIX COLORED PLATES

Illustrated with 36 color plates by Robert Cruikshank (brother of the better known George Cruikshank) with tissue guards as well as in-text woodcuts. Hand colored title page vignette. An early but not first edition of this work with no date on title page. Pencil doodling to the tissue paper over plates 35 and 36. Some fading and rubbing to the boards. There is a modern auction advertisement affixed the the blank endpaper. Frontispiece plate with careful tape repair to rear; also tape repair to front free endpaper. Tooley 197 describes the original done in 1830 which has the same plate collation as this edition and including the woodcuts present in the first issue on pages 7, 40, & 72.
