Ede's Savage Messiah (1931) led to a growing appreciation of his catalytic role in the birth of modernist sculpture in Britain" (ODNB). The two first met in 1913, at an exhibition of Gaudier-Brzeska's work in London. "Pound befriended Gaudier-Bzeska, championed his work in magazine articles and promoted its sale. Together with Wyndham Lewis and his associates, Gaudier-Brzeska was involved in the vorticist movement and his work figured in their exhibitions and publication … Gaudier-Brzeska's massive marble bust, known as the 'Hieratic Head of Ezra Pound', remains an icon of friendship and an avant-garde movement in art" (Wilson, p. 226).
