Boards worn and scuffed, upper board of volume one almost detached, hinges strengthened with cloth tape. Internally there is some marginal pencil annotation, but with plates and illustrations largely clean and unmarked, all as called for. pictorial titles, cxxvii + 88pp, 89 - 209 +cii [xi] pp. A heavy set which may attract a request for additional postage if ordered from locations outside the United Kingdom. .

Cloth with decorative gilt spine and borders. All edges gilt. Vol.1 : 127pp introduction and 92pp text; vol. 2: 208pp + 101pp of appendice, plus index. H: 29cm. With engravings in plates after J. Clennell and other artists: 47 full page engravings in each volume, of high quality. Most depict buildings and monuments in the Borders. Fair to Good overall: the pages are generally very good and well bound but the covers are worn, and volume 2 has the covers detached, with a third of the spine panel detached but present; volume 1 has the bottom 5cm of the spine panel missing. Gilt to covers is still bright to main boards, with some dulling to spines. Pages are mostly clean, some browning to ends and to backs of plate paper, and occasional spotting to margins. Extra engraved titles and engraved plates throughout. 4to (11 1/4 x 9 inches), pages: 209 & cxxvii:ci & unpaginated index. Contemporary half green calf, marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments and gilt lettered direct. Spines uniformly and not unattractively faded to brown, some marginal foxing or tanning to some of the plates. Letterpress title of vol.1 inscribed "No.83". Engraved armorial bookplate. Overall good. The engraved title of volume 2 reads: "The border antiquities of England & Scotland comprising specimens of the architecture, sculpture, and other vestiges of former ages, accompanied with descriptive sketches biographical remarks, and a brief history of the principal events that have occured in this interesting part of Great Britain". Weight 3.6 kg thus extra overseas postage will be requested.
