Description:
London: John Murray, 1846. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair. 441 p. + 16 p. of publisher's ads. 20 cm. Respined with new label. Original paper-covered boards are worn and stained. Small labels and initials on pastedowns. Small stains pp. 10-14. Sir Francis Bond Head (1793-1875) was Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada from 1835 to 1838, at the time of the Upper Canada Rebellion. His conduct was so erratic and irresponsible that he was removed from office; William Lyon Mackenzie called him "Sir Francis Bone Head." In this volume, Head defends his own policies and criticizes those of Lord Durham and Lord Russell. Head observes that the emigrant who left the homeland with a sense of frustration or grievance becomes more conservative as he prospers in the colony and concludes that radicalism is the work of demagogues who sway new arrivals before they've had a chance to succeed. Sabin 31132. TPL 7862. Gagnon I 1638.
