Description:
New York: Whittlesey House,, 1945. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by the author with an original drawing of a scarecrow on the front free endpaper, "To Helen Clark, Olé Scarecrow Stone, Wizard of Oz, Fred Stone", and additionally inscribed by his daughter Dorothy and her husband, actor Charles Collins, on the half-title, "Merry Xmas, Helen - Charles Collins & Dorothy Stone, 1945". Fred Stone famously played the Scarecrow in the 1902 Broadway production of the Wizard of Oz. In 1923 he was Raggedy Andy to Dorothy's Raggedy Ann in the musical Stepping Stones. Ray Bolger, who played the Scarecrow in MGM's adaptation of L. Frank Baum's book, was a fan of Stone's work. The two Scarecrows appeared together in a radio programme promoting the film's release in 1939. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine and front board gilt. With dust jacket. Black and white portrait frontispiece and plates throughout. An excellent copy in a rubbed jacket with a few minor chips and stains.
