Description:
London: George G. Harrap & Company, 1923. Very good.. First edition of this gorgeous outlier of the Golden Age of Illustration, a fully realized fantasy of interplanetary travel written and illustrated by South African architect William Timlin. An Old Man fulfills the dream of his youth, "sailing by way of the Moon, and the more friendly planets" on his way to the Shining City of Mars. The ship of the title, designed by the aged engineer but built by fairies, captures the tale's balance of science fiction and fantasy: one iconic plate depicts the ship, whose design hearkens back to the Age of Discovery, outrunning the magnificent flare of a meteor. The only work authored by Timlin, THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS secured his reputation alongside prolific professional illustrators like Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, and Kay Nielsen. A beautiful copy of a strikingly original space odyssey. Quarto. 12'' x 9''. Original quarter vellum, grey printed paper boards, spine lettered and ornamented in gilt. 96… Read More

Description:
THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS, Harrap, 1923, first edition., light wear to upper corner tips, several of the leaves with closed tears, one with chip missing from lower fore edge (not the fore edge of the color plate), some staining to sections of the front cover, else a vg copy (actually much better save for the staining) bound in 3/4 leather with raised spines stamped in gold gilt decoration and marbled end-papers. This copy retains all 48 textual pages and 38 of the full color tipped-in illustrations. Timlin's art most certainly does not take a back seat to any of his contemporaries: Rackham, Dulac, Nielsen, Thomson, et.al. Among the most desirable children's fantasies of the period as the sumptuous full color plates will attest.

London: George G. Harrap and Company. [1923]. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Original grey paper covered boards with gilt titles and decorations to the spine and black titles to the upper board. No dustwrapper. With 48 colour illustration plates and calligraphic text both mounted on dark grey card throughout. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the spine a little darkened and the paper cracked and frayed to a few spots on the board corners and edges. The contents, with offsetting to the endpaper and some toning and occasional chipping to the page edges (not effecting the illustration or text plates), are otherwise bright and clean throughout and without previous owners' stamps or inscriptions. William M. Timlin (1892 – 1943) was born in Northumberland but spent most of his life in South Africa. Timlin was a highly skilled writer and illustrator and also earned a living as an architect, and his aptitude in that field are clear to see in the… Read More

Description:
London: George G. Harrap & Company Limited, 1923. First Edition. Quarter Vellum over Boards. Very Good/Good. A futuristic journey that was from its very conception sweetly moored in the misty past! 4to. 31 by 24 cm. 48 pp and 48 tipped-in (or mounted) color plates. The singular story and its illustrations are truly sui generis; the fabulous concoction of fantasy rendered here draws equally from both the text and illustrations. Condition: corners bumped, with paper pastedown a bit rubbed. Edgewear to lower edges. A hint of starting, front upper joint. Quarter vellum quite clean and bright. Leaves of card (the backing for the pastedowns) have a slight waviness, as typical of this book. Plates, both text and pictorial, clean. DJ has been rebacked, with most of DJ spine preserved and mounted -- see photos. Minor losses to DJ over boards. Some stains, crease lines, and other signs of wear on DJ. DJ, though, a truly rare survivor in any form, and this DJ has maintained its essential integrity.

The handsomely produced and lavishly illustrated tale of an old man who builds a square-rigged ship with the help of fairy artisans, and sails through the inhabited wonderland of space to a fairyland Mars. Timlin, who was born in England and lived in South Africa, was an architect, musician, composer, painter, and etcher. This was his only attempt at fantasy. The film rights were sold in the United States, where he was popular during his lifetime. Publisher's printed boards backed in gilt-stamped parchment.
