This is a collection of eight early Second World War pamphlets, each publishing British Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s speeches spanning 13 May 1940 to 12 November 1940. These pamphlets were published in Canada simultaneously by three Canadian newspapers on or about 13 December 1940. The newspapers were the Regina Leader-Post, Winnipeg Free Press, and Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. Each of the three newspapers put out their own edition in their respective cities at the same time. A week later, there was also a collective edition with all three newspapers listed as publishers together on the title page. In total, there were eight variations – each of the four publication issues bound in both yellow and green wraps, and orange and green wraps. Churchill's history of the epic 20th Century struggle that was so indelibly stamped by his leadership. Jacketed British first edition sets in marginal condition are not uncommon. However, the coarse cloth bindings of this edition proved susceptible to soiling and mildew, the contents (printed on post-war "Economy Standards" paper) proved highly prone to spotting, the red-stained top edges are most often severely faded, and the dust jackets proved exceptionally vulnerable to pronounced spine toning. This complete, first edition, first printing set features very good volumes in very good dust jackets. The black cloth bindings are square, tight, and clean with bright spine gilt. We note only trivial scuffs and a few bruised corners. The contents are likewise superior for the edition. We find no previous ownership marks.… Read More

This is the only such set we have encountered, apparently unknown to both the collecting community and Churchill’s bibliographers. The bindings are compelling in both craftsmanship and appearance, featuring three-quarter brown Morocco goatskin with marbled paper-cover boards. The spines feature gilt-ruled compartments separated by raised and gilt-decorated spine bands. The covers feature gilt-ruled transitions. The contents are bound with gilt top edges, red and gold silk head and tail bands, and endpapers matching the marbled paper of the boards.
