Description:
The letter is on the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun Letterhead addressed to Ms. Ellen Ruffalo of Phoenix. November 22, 1972. He had been invited to speak a Scottsdale luncheon by Ellen Ruffalo but said he would be in the Superstition Mountains filming all through December of 1972. We know he worked with film director Lee Garmes but have not been able to identify the film. Laid in the original mailing envelope is an announcement for his book "De Grazia and his Mountain, the Superstition" and its various editions. A fine copy.

Description:
Berkeley, California; (1973): University of California Press. Thick Octavo. Second edition, viii, 1085 pages, index. 30 unnumbered pages of plates. Nearly every life form found among North American flowering plants is represented in Arizona. This amazing diversity is partly explained by the fact that the altitudinal range extends from a few feet above sea level to approximately 12,000 feet at the summit of the San Francisco Peaks. The life zone ranges from Arctic-Alpine on these peaks to Lower Sonoran in the southwest and Subtropical in the extreme south. The main objective of this book is to provide means for identifying the approximately 3438 species of flowering plants, ferns, and fern-allies growing without cultivation in Arizona. Keys for identification of the families, genera, and species are provided. Under each species the authors give the geographical distribution within and outside Arizona, and usually the altitudinal range and time of flowering. They describe economic uses, toxic or other…

Description:
A pristine stereographic card taken by Daniel Francis Mitchell who photographed Arizona views for sale from 1877. Mitchell also was in partnership with Baer and remained active in the territory until at least 1883. Accompanied with an envelope from the War Department Headquarers of Arizona addressed to Major A.J. McGonnigle, Chief Quartermaster, [Fort] Whipple, postmarked March 16, 1885. This was a turbulent time since on July 13 he had to report to the Quartermaster General of the U.S. about Samuel Drachman's failure at Fort Huachuca where what the latter did amounted to taking kickbacks of more than $40 on each 100 pounds of hay. Eventually, Drachman was only sued for $475 but it was a blot on his record. Of course, it should be noted that the parade of quartermasters at Fort Whipple were accused of the same thing such as declaring weapons obsolete and then selling them to the local Prescott merchants. This charge was never proved and since the Fort was considered essential in suppressing…

Description:
Prescott, [AZ], 1864. Slight variations in text from the printed published the next year (1865). Possibly W. Claude Jones copy. The printed version adds: "shall take effect and be in force from and after the passage of this act." Two page document signed by Governor John Goodwin, President of the Legislative Council, Coles Bashford and W. Claude-Jones who was Speaker of the House of Representatives. Page one measures 9 1/2" x 15; Page two measures 10 1/2" x 15". Included is the original bill number (46) signed by James Anderson who was the official clerk of the House. It measures 4" x 5 1/4". This remarkable document is important for several reasons. First, it can be compared for minute differences with the actual printed forms of both the Journals of the First Legislative Assembly as well as the Acts, Memorials and Resolutions which were published the following year (1865). The goal was to both exclude minors (under age 21) from losing their hard earned money as well as helping each county to…

Description:
New York: McClure, 1907. First Edition. Octavo. . Half-title, color frontispiece and 6 other color illustrations by N.C. Wyeth, 351 pages. One of the finest novels of Arizona. The author's description of the Arizona desert is striking. " Mile after mile it swept away before him, hot, dry, suffocating, lifeless.... Here and there rock ridges showed with the obscenity of so many skeletons, exposing to the hard, cruel sky the earth's nakedness. Thirst, delirium, death, hovered palpable in the wind; dreadful, unconquerable, ghastly." It is no wonder that Teddy Roosevelt loved his writing (TR also noted that Stewart Edward White was the best man with handling a gun he had ever seen). A very good copy bound in green cloth, color pictorial paste-down to upper board, spine lettering gilt, one lightly bumped corner, spine rubbed with gilt lettering to foot mostly rubbed off, no previous owner's names or bookplates.

Description:
Prescott, AZ: Gosham A. Bray Treasurer Tonto Basin Wagon Road, 1883. The check is issued to one Henry Burns under the authority of Gorham A. Bray, who was the Treasurer for the Tonto Basin Wagon Road Commissioners. Henry Burns worked nine days for $10. From an oral history by five of the living Arizona Rangers made at Northern Arizona University, we learn of the initial roads that were built around the Grand Canyon to haul lumber from which were built ferry boats on the Colorado River. A ferry operated until 1882, then the Babbitt family hired Indian help and built a road for people coming from Nevada and Utah. This Tonto Basin Road was being built in 1883. Eventually, these roads connected Prescott, Kingman and went all the way to Flagstaff as well as Strawberry and Pine. The Sharlot Hall Museum has a nice picture of Gorham Bray, the Treasurer for the Tonto Basin Road operation who later became Mayor of Flagstaff. Though the Soldier Tanks are not in Bryd Howell Granger or Will C. Barnes, they were…

Scottsdale, Arizona;[1988]: MDT Corporation. Octavo. 276 pages, index. Printed originally in 1977, this was reprinted by P.S. Morgan of Scottsdale and distributed to all Arizona State Senators and members of the state House of Representatives with the hope that in some way it would prevent the impeachment of his friend Gov. Evan Mecham. Enclosed is his flyer promoting the book, the list of lame brains who agreed with him such as former Governor of Arizona Jan Brewer, Wayne Stump and three others who were convinced he was not a clown while the majority of Republicans and all Democrats voted for his removal. The attachments are a very useful look at the right wing of the Arizona Republican party in the late 1980's.Plastic comb bound in pictorial wraps. A very good copy.
