Bound in blue cloth lettered and decorated in gilt, spine lettering gilt but faded on volume 1. light wear to corners with light fraying to spine ends. Internally clean and bright without foxing, names or plates. A very good set.

New York: A.R. Keller & Company, 1911. First Edition. Octavo. Portrait frontispiece, 448 pages. Illustrated with photographic images. The Arctic explorers such as Walter Wellman, Roald Amundsen, and Lincoln Ellsworth, captured the attention of the world at the beginning of the 20th century. His attempt to get above the North Pole was marked by horrendous weather. His next trip to cross the Atlantic in an airship failed. The remains of the failed airship are in the Smithsonian. A very bright copy bound in dark blue pictorial gilt cloth lettered and decorated in light blue, white, dark blue and gilt, student's gift inscription for perfect attendance. Near fine with just a few spots of rubbing.

Octavo. 299(1) pp. This is the story of how two men, both endowed with outstanding stamina and skill, reached the top of Everest, and made it back to rejoin their comrades. Bound in blue cloth, spine lettering gilt, corners lightly rubbed, in clipped pictorial dust jacket depicting Mt. Everest in white and brown over light blue-green background, lettering white spine lettering white, some wear to spine ends with tiny nicks, corners and edges showing light wear with top edge of rear panel having a piece torn away;, a few tape mends to underside of jacket, and a few spots of staining or soiling. A very good copy.

Owen Rutter 1889-1944 was an English historian who wrote many important books on travel and history around the globe. He became a partner with The Golden Cockerel in 1933 and he began writing this important collection on Bligh and the Bounty. He edited the series that began in 1934 and was concluded in 1939 in five quarto volumes in six volumes. Each was issued in small print runs of no more than 300 to 350 copies. All are issued in the original 'sail-type' canvas of various colors and designs with top edges and spines gilt. The following are in order of publication. Vol. I. All captions in English and with tissue guards. The technique was to reproduce images from glass slides. It begins with Human Carriers with 13 images of the ways people throughout the world carry items whether on their head, their back, with various water devices, etc. It follows with animal carriers, then, the variety of water transportation types of small boats, steamers, Harbors. Railroad transportation. Section 22 shows the possibilities of aerial transportation showing two early images of the Wright Brothers (noting only near Dayton, Ohio), an early dirigible, and a traditional balloon. There is no doubt that James Bruce (1730-1794) was a remarkable explorer though his writings on Abyssinia had come into question by Dr. Samuel Johnson as well as John Wolcott (using his familiar pseudonym, Peter Pindar). The illustrious dedicatory page quotes both Dr. Johnson and James Boswell, who Peter Pindar only quotes about his drinking bout while he insists that James Bruce is a history of "thundering diarrhea". Half-title, folding frontispiece and 12 other plans and tinted plates, 2 large folding maps at rear, with hundreds of textual wood block illustrations. The author became increasingly interested in locating and unearthing the great cities of biblical renown. He quite his law firm and traveled to where he believed Nineveh was but found other important palaces and artifacts before locating Nineveh. Bound in full red polished calf ruled in gilt, raised bands with compartments fully decorated in gilt, red morocco spine label gilt marbled endpapers, all edges marbled, some wear to head, some spots of discoloration. Internally text is clean and without foxing, previous owner's name plate with name scratched out. A very good copy of this important work.

Np/nd [ca.2008]: [Robert Parkin Johnson]. Limited Edition. Octavo. No. 136 of 500 privately printed copies. [iv] 182 pages, map, photographs, with an introduction by Mayotta Southworth. Written by a physician who spent six months on Pitcairn caring for the medical and some of the psychological needs of the islanders, this book gets "inside" the Pitcairners' lives in a way no other book has done. Certain to become an expensive, rare book because of its limited printing. These letters from Dr. Southworth to his family, gathered into a book are an intimate, revealing picture of life on Pitcairn in a most interesting and sometimes graphic way. Inscribed by Alice Southworth and also Ann S. McFarland Southworth both to a noted collector of the Pitcairn saga. A fine bright copy bound in dark green stiff paper wraps lettered in black, spine lettering black.

New York: E.P. Dutton and Co, 1969. First Edition. Folio. 168pp. including index, Foreword and notes by Don Fowler, photographs, and epilogue by Eliot Porter. This is Powell's dramatic journal of 1869, edited and introduced by Don Fowler. Portions of this work were presented by Scribner's Magazine over 150 years ago. Eliot Porter contributed a 48 page gallery of four-color photographs. Powell, with 10 men and four boats traveled down the raging Colorado River, through the Grand Canyon. After 13 weeks, Powell emerged from the Canyon with only two boats left and 6 survivors. The photographs are quite striking. A handsome copy bound in tan cloth, spine lettering gilt. A fine copy in nearly fine pictorial dust jacket.

It was Cook who brought to Victorian England the idea that travel to exotic places in the Near East (particularly those that ended up in Palestine) would be akin to a religious experience. They would understand exactly when they were travel by train in sleeping cars, boats with fine accommodations, by car or what gratuities might be made (not included in the rates they quoted). Agatha Christie would stay in their special suites. Bound in color pictorial wraps, endpapers are maps. some staining or rubbing to wrappers, spine rubbed with chip to foot.

In Volume I are Banks's observations on the Brazilian to Fuegian coast of South America and a remarkably full record on many aspects of the 'natural history" of the Society Islands (particularly Tahiti) and New Zealand. Volume II opens with his ever useful summary account of the Maori of New Zealand and is followed by the observations made along the eastern coast of Australia from Botany Bay to Cape York, an account of a brief stay in Sava n the Lesser Sunda group and one of a longer stay in Batavia on the island of Java and a shorter time at Princess Island in the Sunda Strait. Besides the two page map, there are 10 photographs showing Camps I-IV and when they reached 22,800 feet. Though there had been several attempts in the 1920's, the 1933 was the first major attempt which showed how future attempts would have to be planned differently. By 1950, Nepal began to allow expeditions. A fascinating look at what was happening 20 years before Sir Edmund Percival Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers to ascend to Everest's summit. Bound in gray cloth decorated in blind, spine lettering black, in unclipped pictorial dust jacket, which has off-set to the front cover, rubbed and with some wear to spine ends and corners.

First published in 1810 and because of a few errors and inaccuracies of expression, the publisher's felt the British edition deemed the best choice for a reprint. Pike gives a day-by-day account of his travels. His travel through Colorado in the dead of winter was especially interesting. Bound in blue cloth lettered in gilt, rebacked in maroon cloth lettered in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, endpapers renewed, with nice repair to outer margin of frontispiece. A very nice copy without names or bookplates.
