Description:
India, 1922. Ephemera. Fine. A two page typewritten letter from Rev. and Mrs. Stanley Jones, missionaries in India, to Mrs. Tripner. The letter describes how a flood had ruined grain, medicine, books, furniture, buildings. School continues in any available dry spot, and the benefit that street children gain from reading and writing, general education, cleanliness etc. Eli Stanley Jones (1884-1973) was an American Methodist Christian missionary, theologian, and author. He is remembered chiefly for his inter religious lectures to the educated classes in India, thousands of which were held across the Indian subcontinent during the first decades of the 20th century. He is sometimes considered the "Billy Graham of India." His seminal work, The Christ of the Indian Road, sold more than a million copies worldwide after its publication in 1925. (Wikipedia). The letter is written by his wife and fellow missionary, Mabel Lossing Jones. Mrs. Jones explains that her husband is on an extended trip to China… Read More

Description:
Dunedin: Bishop's Court, 1876. Very good condition. A four page letter from the Anglican Bishop addressed to a "Dear Miss Yonge", possibly Charlotte Mary Yonge, the noted Victorian novelist, concerning a task the Bishop has asked her to undertake. The work he has requested seems to involve Bishop Palleson (who died in 1871), as Bishop Nevill refers to the possibility that "some ladies with whom dear Bp Palleson was acquainted to take up this work". If this help should not materialize, the Bishop mentions the possibility of traveling to England himself for an upcoming general meeting of Bishops. Nevill closes on a note of warning against exposing children to a Catholic education: "It is somewhat hard to see so large a number of our people incurring all the risk of sending their children to be taught at the schools of the Romish". He warns of a parent recently requesting aid in helping a daughter "who had adopted Romish error thro' love for her Romish teachers." During this time period Anglican… Read More

Description:
Providence R.I.: Knowles Vose & Co, 1838. First printing. Pamphlet. Very good condition. James Backhouse and George Walker were Quaker missionaries who traveled in 1831 to Australia establishing Quaker meeting houses and to evangelize to convicts and settlers. While touring prisons and penal colonies, they were appalled by what they saw. They interceded for prisoners and advocated temperance and thrift throughout Australia for the next 6 years. According to Smith's "Catalog of Friends' Books" their plea was first published in York England in 1837. That same year an anonymous response was written, entitled "A Letter Addressed to James Backhouse... by a Convict Confined on Goat Island." This letter is a published response thanking them for their ministering from a Port Jackson convict, who signs himself "WM. ****". The present pamphlet is an American reprint of the convict's "Letter." It was written in support of Backhouse's plea, and of the religious life. Although the tone is religious, a few… Read More

New York: MacMillan company, 1935. 3rd Edition, New American Edition. Hardcover. Otherwise very good condition. A complete 12 volume set, with original dust jackets. Sir James George Frazer [1854 - 1941] was a Scottish social anthropologist whose study of myth and religion became his area of expertise. His work was influential in the early stages of modern studies of mythology and comparative religion; his descriptions have met with current day criticism. When Sir James George Frazer began his investigation of the legend of the hunted priest in the sacred grove at Nemi in 1889, he hoped to draw a "picture or moving panorama of the vanished life of primitive man all over the world, from the tropics to the poles." The result was The Golden Bough, a twelve-volume masterpiece that became the classic study of the origins of magic and religion — and, in the words of Time magazine, "one of the twentieth century's most influential books." This extraordinary anthropological work covers the development… Read More
