London: John Murray, 1882. First English edition, 1882. Hardback. 8vo. Vol. I: xiii, 376pp, 24 illustrations; Vol. II: vii, 347pp, 32 illustrations. Dark red boards with elaborate gilt illustration to upper boards and gilt titles to spines. No jackets. Thausig's extensive and scholarly work on Durer has probably only been surpassed in breadth and scope by that of Erwin Panofski. It is still a very useful source for any student of Durer and the art of his time. Both volumes in good condition but have obviously been much used. Boards generally a little rubbed and soiled. Volume I lower board is the most rubbed and soiled. Both upper boards and their gilt decoration are still quite bright. Corners all a little bumped. Spines somewhat faded with wear and fraying at extremities. Text block edges a little dust soiled. Internally both volumes have some sporadic cracking at gutters but text blocks are still sound with all pages firmly holding in place. Volume I has lost the tissue guard to its…

Description:
Berlin: Deutscher Verlag fur Kunstwissenschaft, 1971. First edition, 1971. Hardback. 303pp followed by 191 monochrome plates. 8 full-page colour plates within the text. Red cloth boards with gilt monograms to upper board and gilt titles to spine. Dust jacket and slipcase. Fedja Anzelewsky has produced an authoritative study of the paintings of Durer. The benefit of this detailed study is that it focuses entirely on the details of the paintings and therefore separates this body of work from Durer's many other graphic activities. This is a serious and scholarly work and the text is in German. Book in near fine condition. Dust jacket in good condition and unclipped. A little edge wear and some minor creasing. Spine slightly discoloured. Slipcase in fair condition - structurally sound but a little rubbed and soiled. This is an extremely heavy book but no additional shipping costs to UK post codes.

Description:
Hilversum, Holland: The Paper Publications Society, 1958. First edition, 1958. Hardback. 266pp. Black & white frontispiece. Unnumbered copy from a stated edition of 600. Grey cloth covered boards with gilt to spine. Bookbinder's ticket to front pastedown (hand-boekbinderij van Doorn, Utrecht). The colophon states that the end-papers were reproduced from a design lent by Armin Renker of Zekall, Duren, Germany and the binding by Brandt & Zoon of Amsterdam. As the endpapers are plain white, rather than having a design, and the bookbinder's ticket indicates a different binder from that mentioned in the colophon, together with this being an unnumbered copy, it seems possible - perhaps even likely - that this book was made up from unbound sheets remaining from the original print run and therefore might be a copy additional to the 600 produced for the subscribers. The book is correctly collated and all listed illustrations are correctly placed. In this work, Dr Tschudin has brought to light…

Description:
New York: Dover Publications Inc, 2006. Paperback. Unpaginated. Sixteen plates of traditional Arabic patterns as used by artists, architects and craftsmen in creating the beautiful works of their times. Modern designers will also find these plates useful, and colourists will delight in the infinite possibilities these figures give them. Because of religious prohibitions of figurative representation, Islamic art followed a very different path from Western art. Islamic artists and craftsmen sought to merge the spiritual with the aesthetically pleasing use of ornamental design. Arabesques, geometric patterns, and symbolic images of animals and plants fill the tile-covered walls and floors of mosques and are present in the intricate designs of carpets. These illustrations can be coloured with crayon, felt-tip pen, acrylic, watercoulour, tempera or oil paint. Mixed mehtods can be used to create even more interesting effects. Colouring one side or both can produce rich combinations. Book in very good…

Description:
New Haven: Yale University Press, 2007. First edition, 2007. Hardback. 174pp. Dust jacket. George Nelson (1908 - 1986) was a Fellow of the American Academy of Rome when he wrote a series of articles for the American journal "Pencil Points". These articles examined the state of European architecture during a period of fundamental change in building design. These verbal portraits by Nelson eloquently introduced astonishing buildings and fascinating personalities to a wider audience. This volume brought together this important collection of writings for the first time. The subjects include figures who would prove to be both major (Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Gio Ponti and Walter Gropius) and minor (Bent Helweg-Moeller, the Luckhardt Brothers and Ivar Tengbom). All of these architects would soon be affected by World War II in some way - they would emigrate, be put out of work or seek new careers. These essays spark fascinating questions about the canon of modern architecture: how would…

Description:
Leicester: Magna Books, 1992. First edition, 1982. Hardback. 375pp. Dust jacket. This copiously illustrated and deeply researched book fills a void in British ceramic literature, telling the story of this major eighteenth and nineteenth century English porcelain factory. The long and fascinating story is told with the help of a mass of original factory records and the resulting account probably reflects the organisation of other contemporary potteries, so this book will prove of interest beyond its immediate subject. The chronological account of the Chamberlain factory and its output, superbly illustrated by photographs in the text, is followed by a descriptive list of Chamberlain decorators and a comprehensive list of the thousands of patterns introduced by the fatcory. A final chapter is devoted to the types of Chamberlain decorative wares in all their great variety. An Appendix contains a contemporary account of the working of the factory in the nineteenth century. Over 450 black & white and…

London: Sampson Low, Marston & Co. Hardback. Very Good/None. The book is in good condition. The binding is still sound and tight, a little wrinkling to the cloth at the top and bottom of the spine. Pages slightly tanned - most noticeable on the end papers. This is described as a 'New and Cheaper Edition'. The first edition was 1875. This edition is undated. Mrs Bury Palliser (1805 - 1875) also wrote about lace making. This little pocket book (approx 4.5' by 6.5") offers a guide to china marks and is described in its preface as: 'A portable book of marks and mongrams is a necessary complement to the extensive ceramic works of the present day. In this little volume, care has been taken not to assign a locality to marks except upon unquestionable authority. It is better to raise doubt than to sow error. The one time and research may dispel; the other it is impossible to eradicate when once allowed to take root."
