Description:
From the front DJ flap: "In this spellbinding new history of the Civil War, David Goldfield crafts the first major reinterpretation of the conflict - its causes and costs - since James M. McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom. Where past scholars have limned the war as a triumph of freedom, Goldfield sees it as America's greatest failure: a breakdown caused by the infusion of evangelical religion into the public sphere. As the Second Great Awakening surged through the nation, political questions became matters of good and evil - differences serious enough to kill and die for."
"The price of the war was horrific, but...it made the United States one nation and eliminated the divisive presence of slavery."
The narrative is from the 1830's to the end of Reconstruction.

From front DJ flap: "Introducing us first to 'the people Jesus knew," Thomas Cahill describes the oppressive Roman political presence, the pervasive Greek cultural influence, and expecially the widely varied social and religious context of the Judaism in which Jesus moved and flourished. These backgrounds, essential to a complete understanding of Jesus, lead to the author's stunningly original interpretation of the New Testament - much of it based on material from the ancient Greek brilliantly translated by the author himself - that will delight readers and surprise even biblical scholars.

From Introduction: "When I began to research drive-ins I had no preset ideas or preconceived notions - with the exception of the drive-in's reputation as a passion pit. ... I have tried to strike a balance in this book between the technical aspects of the drive-in - which didn't fuel its rise but did contribute to its cecline - and the sociocultural ones: that is, who the audience was, why they went, the response of the community at large to this new cultural force, what factors let do the outdoor theaters' phenomenal rise and, later, to its steady decline toward its inevitable demise, and so on."

Description:
From internal dust jacket:
For most of it's history, Scotland was a small, impoverished country with a reputation for violence, ignorance, and superstition. But suddenly, in the 18th century, it transformed itself into an intellectual superpower, providing the world with some of its greatest philosophers, architects, scientists, and men of letters. How did this remarkable phenomenon occur?
In How the Scots Invented the Modern World, Arthur Herman unravels the mystery of how Scotland quickly went from almost medieval levels of poverty and oppression to the highest literacy rate in Europe. Combining a seamless historical narrative with an impressive accumulation of evidence, Herman shows how Scotland provided Western civilization with some of its most enduring ideals, including democracy, free speech, equal opportunity, and universal education. The Scots, Herman writes, are the true inventors of the modern social sciences, including anthropology, history, sociology, and economics.
