no city, Mexico: Le Cie de Charencey, 1847. 7p., single large leaf of semi-alkaline paperstock folded twice to make 8 panels, four on a side, measuring 8.5x5.5 inches. Must be unfolded to read the 7 printed print-blocks, the 8th being blank. Find texts in the Spanish and the Mayan languages. Marginal toning to every page, deepest to outermost, slightly misfolded in the printery, a very good copy: the condition is near pristine.

Washington DC: The American Historical Association, 1971. Paperback. Pp.642-689 [i.e., 47 pages] illustrated with tables and two period images, entire number of the journal (some 400 pages total). Softbound in fat 10x7 inch glossy decorated wraps, covers and edges somewhat worn with a small adhesion to rear, clean, sound and unmarked within. Icarianism was a phenomenon described herein as a pre-Marxian communism. Other featured articles: The Labor Problem at Jamestown 1607-18 [with] The Unsuccessful Adolescence of Heinrich Himmler [with] Historical Analogism, Public Policy, and Social Science in Eleventh- and Twelfth-Century China.

Boston: Boston Book & Art Shop, 1962. 258p., first American edition (so stated) from British plates, high-gloss alkaline paperstock throughout, b&w period photography coordinated with a running text, hardbound in lovely gray buckram boards with blue and silver spine labelling, and an intact, unclipped dust jacket. Book's front free endpaper bears a photographer's ownership stamp, jacket's top edge is worn with tiny losses at the head rim, a generally sound clean copy of a clever approach to the history of photography.

Dolgellau, Wales: Argraffedig Gan Evan Jones, 1847. Two years of the monthly journal, 378, 378p., bound in one volume, leather boards separated, top of spine very extensively chipped, much edgewear, last page taped with yellowed cellotape to rear board; text is all present but a reference copy only, possible candidate for rebinding. Perhaps the most important Welsh-language political journal of its time. This run includes an article critical of slavery in the southern US.

Edo: Tsutaya Kichizo, 1849. Paperback. Approximately 57x29 inch map of Japan's prefectural divisions, folded in dark paper cover with title label, notes written with brush on rear cover. Some splits along the folds have old repairs to the rear, while other splits remain unbacked. A good candidate for professional rebacking. Small label of the bookseller J. Stanoff, a specialist in East Asian materials.

Stanford, CA: Stanford University Press, 1945. vi, 44p., 10.75x14.25 inches, decorated title page of green Monterey Cypress (with light-offset reflection from ink transfer, looks rather like the shadow of the tree!) foreword, marginal annotation, three tipped-in photo portraits of the subjects, very good first edition hardcover limited to 105 copies bound in tan cloth, decorated with Cypress design and quarter brick-cloth backing and paper title label on spine. Generational account of an early California pioneer, his family and particularly his daughter Lee L. Jacks, big landowners in Monterey County; one of the higher points on the hilly Peninsula is "Jacks Peak." Presswork uncredited, but one Arthur Lites is responsible for "decoration and design;" his neat small cypress-tree silhouette, struck in moss-green, may be found on every single page.

Signed binding: "Copeland Binder." Very Good. Novella about travels in Europe, in the original publisher's cloth, by the Rhode Island author.

Leipzig: Verlag von Heinrich Matthes, 1849. Hardcover. 294, 323p., hardbound in matched calf boards gilt over 7x4.5 inch marbled boards; ex library from a personal marxist collection, spine has ugly green labels and has been overtaped with clear adhesive to secure splitting backstrips; gilt spine-titling remains legible. Boards show much cardstock, leather corner-tips are largely worn away. Find three ownership stamps on endsheets of both volumes, a partially cracked front hinge in v.2, heavy foxing to text edges, title pages and other leaves.

Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1995. Hardcover. 312p., 9x6 inches; no dustjacket, minor foxing on fore-edge, else in very good condition. On the Skaneateles Community, established in 1843 by the Society for Universal Inquiry and Reform on a farm in upstate New York.

Philadelphia, 1848. Ephemera. [4]p., wraps. Folded. Signed on one side: "J Chester Morris, Phila." Embossed stamp on upper left corner of page [1], faded. Satirical verse in dialect copied by hand from Lowell's Bigelow Papers, a work of satirical poetry attributed to Hosea Bigelow that critiqued major topics of the day such as the Mexican War and abolitionism. Morris (1831-1923) was a doctor in the Philadelphia area.
