Criticism on a number of writers, mostly modern (from the Harlem Renaissance to the present), with sections on slave narratives, Wheatley, Dunbar and Du Bois, and contributions from a number of well-known authors (Barbara Christian, Arnold Rampersand, Henry Louis Gates, etc.).
