Herndon was a "self-retired" Vietnam veteran who went AWOL and escaped to Paris. In 1970, he returned openly to the United States with the help of the veterans' organization Safe Return to face the charge of desertion in a military court.

Includes words of support from Norman Mailer, the ACLU, American Legion, New York Post, etc.
