Description:
Alexandria Bay / Bloomfield: Museum Restoration Service, 1983. 100 pp, 11 1/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings. "The author opens the book with a discussion of the origins of the knives and the problems they provide for today's student. A carefully worked out typology is complemented by a comphrehensive study of the materials and techniques involved in the manufacture, along with considerable additional background information on the development of knives. The heart of the book consists of photographs of over 60 outstanding specimens of American primitive knives. Each photo is accompanied by a fully descriptive text, with dimensions, pertinent structural details and notes on dating and provenance where appropriate. A third section is devoted to the study of this class of knife from the collector's point of view. Topics covered include possible sources of specimens, hints on conservation and restoration, an entirely new condition guide, and a chapter on fakes and foolers that will…

Description:
New York: Assouline, 2008. 288 pp, 12" H. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs. "At the beginning of the twentieth century, the American accessory designer looked to Europe and said, 'I can do better.' In the first volume of its kind, (this book) tells the story of the objects that garnish what we wear - from the functional to the purely decorative and statement driven. Over the last eight decades, the forward-thinking American accessory designer, in collusion with America's royalty - the Hollywood star - and in sync with the unstoppable dominance of a rebellious popular culture, has assembled a cabinet of curiosities, including everything from Adrian's witty Hollywood hats to Ralph Lauren's all-American accoutrement, to Madonna's rubber bracelets. It is a tradition that continues today with a stellar group of designers whose work exemplifies the American accessory. Commissioned by the Council of Fashion Designers of America, 'American…

Description:
London: G. Bell and Sons, 1955. 118 pp + 40 b&w plates, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w drawings, plates. "The author has tackled the subject from an unusual viewpoint, so as to help collectors in examining the various objects made in pewter, particularly in the British Isles, in conjunction with the earlier recorded information about the methods of manufacture and the styles in vogue in bygone days. The records of the Worshipful Company of Pewterers of London have been freely drawn upon. Extracts from them have been included, which should help students and collectors to decide for themselves the merits or otherwise of particular objects, and to gauge the comparative rarity of individual specimens of pewter-ware. The features which distinguish the pewter of one period from that of another are made clear, either in the text or by line and half-tone illustrations, and the various classes of pewter-ware have been grouped in separate chapters. There are also a full bibliography, index, and notes…

Description:
Port Credit, Ontario: St. Lawrence Starch Company 48 cards (circa 1942) from the St. Lawrence Starch Company's WWII "Bee Hive Aeroplane Pictures" sales promotion, plus a flyer for "List No. 2" showing 42 planes and describing the rules for obtaining the cards, plus 1 shipping envelope, 7 cardboard dividers and 1 contemporary newspaper clipping. In the early 1940s, the St. Lawrence Starch Company temporarily suspended its enormously popular Hockey Photo promotion, introducing this series in its place. As with the hockey cards, the keen collector had to send in one Bee Hive Syrup label or two starch product labels for each picture - this collection represents a lot of syrup tins! The cards are made up of a matte card backing (47 orange and 1 red, approx. 7 11/16" wide by 5 3/8" high) with a b&w photograph (approx. 6 11/16" wide by 4 1/2" high) glued by its top edge. The orange cards have the plane's name beneath the photograph and further description…
